Guided walking tours
For centuries Leiden was one of the major Dutch cities. In the 17th century, often called the Dutch ‘Golden Age’, the city not only housed one of the most important universities of Europe, it was also the second-largest city of the Netherlands due to its important linen industry. There was much poverty in the populous city, but there were also many attempts to alleviate poverty. Notably the almshouses for the elderly, on which Leiden still prides itself, founded by wealthy benefactors. On the walking tour you will visit a number of these almshouses and pass a few major historical sites of the city, giving you an impression of Leiden’s history and historical charity.
Your guide: Henk Looijesteijn Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours. Maximum number of participants: 15.
The tour will be offered twice, on Friday 20 march at 11.00 and at 14.00.
You can sign up in advance by sending an e-mail to Els Kuperus (els.kuperus@iisg.nl)
