Museum De Lakenhal is the art and history museum of the city of Leiden. The museum is housed in the former Leiden Cloth Hall, a building dating back to 1640. The collection includes highlights by old masters such as Lucas van Leyden, Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Steen, alongside works by modern and contemporary artists such as Theo van Doesburg, Claudy Jongstra and Erwin Olaf. Leiden's illustrious past is featured in collection presentations such as The Siege and Relief of Leiden (1574) and Seven Centuries of Leiden Cloth.

At the museum, everyone can explore the age-old civilisations of Egypt, the Classical World, the ancient Near East, and the Netherlands in prehistoric, Roman, and medieval times. In 2018 the museum celebrated its 200th anniversary.

The Hortus botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands. Established in 1590 and expanded in the centuries that followed, the Hortus is the green heart of Leiden. You will find peace and inspiration here. Researchers from all over the world come to us to study the renowned collection. Carolus Clusius cultivated the first large tulip collections in Europe there, and Philipp Franz von Siebold introduced around 700 hitherto unknown plants from Japan and China. Nowadays, this green treasure trove houses rare plants from Southeast and East Asia, Southern Europe and South Africa, some of which are almost extinct in nature.

To further express the long and historically unique ties between the Netherlands and Japan, in 1999 the SieboldHuis Foundation was established. The aim of this foundation was to reopen the SieboldHuis as a museum to house the collection that Siebold himself had once exhibited here. Franz Philipp von Siebold (1796-1866) lived in this house and displayed his collection of Japanese objects and artefacts to a captivated public. Today, after more than 150 years, his former residence is now the first official Japan centre in the Netherlands.
